National Pastime is a new musical comedy that pays homage to the screwball comedies of the 1930s and 40s. Set during the Depression, National Pastime is the story of WZBQ, a struggling radio station in Baker City, Iowa.
The last time WZBQ had any ratings at all was when they broadcast the exploits of the Cougars, a minor league baseball team. But that team is long gone. In order to save their station and boost the ratings, WZBQ decides to invent the team all over again and broadcast their fictional games over the air. The plan works.
The numbers soar, the station starts to make money, and the entire town of Baker City is energized. Trouble comes when Life Magazine accidentally stumbles into Baker City and wants to do a story on the team. National Pastime is the hilarious and heartwarming story of the Baker City Cougars – the greatest team never to exist.
